چکیده

Dne hundred and seventy five passerine birds from the Czech Republic were examined for the presence of sarcosporidia; auly 5 (all great tits) were positive for muscle cysts. Three great tits experimentally fed sporocysts (12.2 x 8.4, 11-13x 7.5-9 !lm) from a goshawk developed cysts while 2 house sparrows (Passer domesticus) were not infected. The cysts from great tits muscles were morphological1ysimilar to thosefoundin natural infections. The thin-walledcysts containedbanana-shapedcystozoites6.9 x 1.8(5.9-8.5x 1.3-2.3)!lmin size. The natural life cycle of this Sarcocystis species involves goshawks and great tits. The relation of this species to S. accipitris is discussed.

Predation as a landscape effect: the trading off by prey species between predation risks and protection benefits.

1. Predators impose costs on their prey but may also provide benefits such as protection against other (e.g. nest) predators. The optimal breeding location in relation to the distance from a nesting raptor varies so as to minimize the sum of costs of adult and nest predation. We provide a conceptual model to account for variation in the relative predation risks and derive qualitative prediction...

How, and Why, Is the Goshawk (accipiter Gentilis) Affected by Modern Forest Management in Fennoscandia?

-•The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is a common raptor in the boreal forest of Fennoscandia (Norway, Sweden and Finland), with a present breeding density of about 3 pr/100 km 2 of forest area. Several independent studies show that goshawk populations in Fennoscandia have declined by 50-60% from the 1950s to the 1980s. This decline coincides in time with an intensification of forest mana...

Spatial assessment of the potential risk of avian influenza A virus infection in three raptor species in Japan

Avian influenza A, a highly pathogenic avian influenza, is a lethal infection in certain species of wild birds, including some endangered species. Raptors are susceptible to avian influenza, and spatial risk assessment of such species may be valuable for conservation planning. We used the maximum entropy approach to generate potential distribution models of three raptor species from presence-on...

Effects of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident on goshawk reproduction

Although the influence of nuclear accidents on the reproduction of top predators has not been investigated, it is important that we identify the effects of such accidents because humans are also top predators. We conducted field observation for 22 years and analysed the reproductive performance of the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis fujiyamae), a top avian predator in the North Kanto area of Japan,...

When hawks attack: animal-borne video studies of goshawk pursuit and prey-evasion strategies.

Video filmed by a camera mounted on the head of a Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) was used to study how the raptor used visual guidance to pursue prey and land on perches. A combination of novel image analysis methods and numerical simulations of mathematical pursuit models was used to determine the goshawk's pursuit strategy. The goshawk flew to intercept targets by fixing the prey at a ...
